“The key to dealing with stress is simple: stay cool and focused.”

Studies have consistently shown that when learning stops being fun for children, it stops altogether. That is why it is essential to provide children with a stress-free learning environment as often as possible.

Most kindergarten and first-grade children tend to be more excited and passionate about their schooling. Unfortunately, as they age, the emphasis on memorization as a means of education diminishes the joy and excitement they once felt about school.

It is often a misconception that students who laugh, interact with one another, or are creative in art, music, or dance are not fulfilling their academic responsibilities. As a result, many educators often insist on silence in the classroom and that students sit in straight rows, facing forward, and simultaneously follow the assigned content.

A child needs to be in a stress-free environment because stress can harm development. Children who experience chronic stress may struggle with emotional regulation, problem-solving, and decision-making. They may also have difficulty with physical development, such as growth and sleep patterns. Additionally, stress can impact a child’s mental health and well-being, leading to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and behavioural problems.

Creating a stress-free environment for a child can involve several strategies, such as providing a safe and supportive home-school environment, encouraging open communication, and helping the child to muddle through. It may also involve reducing sources of stress in the child’s life, such as high expectations from parents/peers or exposure to traumatic events. Parents and caregivers can support a child’s overall development and well-being by promoting a healthy and stress-free environment. Lastly, always remember:

“Don’t stress the could haves, if it should have, it would have.”
